10 years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake. Ishinomaki Laboratory was initially founded as a public workshop in June 2011 for the residents of disaster-stricken Ishinomaki City and has continued to this day to utilise design and craftsmanship to bolster recovery and revitalisation efforts in the region. After relocating several times, we are now in a space more than ten times larger than our last location. The last 10 years have seen many developments, such as our numerous collaborations with international and Japanese designers alike. Additionally, as part of our Made in Local initiative, projects have been launched in the UK, Philippines, US, Germany, and other countries, and domestically in Japan with Karimoku Furniture through the Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku collaborative brand.
This exhibition held at Karimoku Commons Tokyo was accessorised by the interior stylist Yumi Nakata. The knick-knacks were hunted and gathered from Ashizawa's and TORAFU ARCHITECTS' studio to be arranged in this living gallery with the brand’s furniture where the visitors can fully experience and learn the Ishinomaki Laboratory's 10-year-long trajectory.
